Do you practice the same religion as Jesus?

Do you practice the same religion as Jesus?
Learning About Our Biblical Heritages Series

When we read Acts 2:14-39 in our church, we were told that it was the first revival preached by Peter after Jesus ascended up into Heaven. It sounded a lot like one of the old fashion tent revival our church held in the summer. Peter ended his sermon with these words:

Repent and be baptized in the name of Yeshua the Anointed One for the remission of sins. You will then receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Peter’s revival was a huge success – 3,000 people believed and were baptized that day! What those words meant to us was that 3,000 people were saved and became Christians -- they would go to Heaven for eternity instead of burning in Hell for eternity!

However, for some reason our preachers didn’t spend as much attention on the words that follow. They are very important because they tell us what the 3,000 people did after they were baptized. Pay close attention to what newly baptized people did in Peter’s religion (Acts 2:41-45):

1. They ate together daily with the apostles and other believers.

2. They were taught by the apostles daily.

3. They prayed together daily.

4. They gathered in the Temple daily.

5. They sold their possessions, goods, and land.

6. They brought the money they received and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

After you were saved did you eat with the preacher and church members every day? Were you taught by the leaders of the church every day? Did you pray together with the preacher and church members daily? Did you sell all of the things you owned and lay the money you received at the feet of your church leaders?

So why don’t churches today do what Peter taught his new converts to do? The answer to that question is very important. Peter was personally chosen by Jesus (really Yeshua) to be an apostle. Peter lived with him and was taught by him. Clearly everything Peter preached came from Jesus.

Why don’t churches today do what Peter taught his new converts to do? The obvious answer is that churches today do not teach what Jesus taught Peter. So, if churches today do not teach what Jesus taught, how can they claim that they represent Jesus? By the way, another important question you might want to consider is this one – What did Jesus (the real Yeshua) teach about entering eternal life? That is probably the most important question of all for most Christians.
